Shop Talk: Expansion

expansion or one woman shop

Welcome to Shop Talk, where we chat about everything from the business processes and procedures you swear by to how you handle tough situations (like letting go of a client) to what gets you up on Monday morning. Give us a sneak peek into your business and let yourself inspire (and be inspired by!) our community.

Some freelancers and solopreneurs start their businesses with the end goal of expanding and managing a team. Others thrive on their own and plan to keep it that way. So, are you happy on your own or are you headed toward expansion? Do you aspire to manage contractors and employees or are you content to be a one woman shop forever?

  1. Ultimately I want my business to be able to run without me. Firstly because if I am sick (or otherwise tied up) I want my business to stay healthy. Also I may want to do other projects and perhaps retire one day but don’t want all the work I’ve put into this business to be lost. My medium term goal is to manage a small team, and long term goal is for the business to function entirely without me 🙂 It all starts with hiring a trainee sometime in the next 12 months (exciting!)

    • Hi Angela- Totally makes sense, especially the part about making sure all your hard work and best practices aren’t lost over time! Just a heads up that we’ll have some resources coming up on the site about how to prepare to bring on a contractor/trainee!
